Stop scratching your head and read this book. I'm totally serious. Whether you are white or black, Catholic or Presbyterian, this book is for you.

I was laughing out loud from the very first page. These women are hilarious, clever, witty and smart. They are confident in themselves and in living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 

Don't be surprised if you can't put the book down once you have started. It is made up of short, sweet and poignant journal entries which can be devoured one or twenty at a time. I loved their "urban dictionary" which came in handy. I also loved their honesty about life and its choices and consequences. These women are real. They tell it how it is. They don't hold anything back...they are 100% legit. 

If I had to chose my favorite story they shared it would either have to be the one about Mrs. Platt, the shoplifter, or the Prayer Warrior. I really loved them all.

I have.

Scott asked me to marry him.

I said, YES!!!

LIFE-CHANGING.

Last year I was asked another life-changing question. 

Well, actually 3 questions. 

As I was flipping through channels, watching "trash-TV" (which is what I call it because most of it pretty much is) , I heard the spirit whisper to my soul...

"At what point in your life are you going to give THIS up and CHOOSE ME?"

Followed by,

"Does this mindless entertainment BRING LASTING HAPPINESS?"

And then sealed with this final question...

"How old will you be when you decide you are ready to SEEK ME FIRST?"

I won't lie. That last question threw me for a loop. And I most certainly wasn't ready to give up watching Modern Family and Grey's Anatomy when, for a brief moment, I settled on the ripe old age of 57.  

My difficult response to these 3 questions I'll save for another post. But were these questions life-changing?

Absolutely. 

Am I a different person because of them?

Most assuredly, yes.

Squeaking by...and The Continuous Conversion by Brad Wilcox

Sunday morning I pulled out my beautiful violin. Every time I open my case I am brought back to Christmas Day. I had no idea what was in that big box, and when I opened it, I wept with joy. I have always dreamed of learning to play the violin. And Scott knew it.

My Violin has now been in my possession for almost 3 months.

I tightened my bow, applied fresh rosin to it, and put my chin rest on my violin. I stared down the fingerboard making sure that I was going to hit an open A and then I started down with my bow stroke. It rang out beautifully until I willfully placed my first finger down, shooting for a B and missing terribly.

SQUEAK!

I quickly corrected my finger placing searching for the correct intonation. On and on I repeated these steps, hitting the note in one instant and then missing the mark in the next.

I practiced Twinkle Twinkle, I Am Like A Star Shining Brightly, and London Bridges. I played for about 15 minutes until I felt that Scott, who was trying to sleep about 5 feet away from where I was practicing, would ultimately get frustrated with my efforts and tell me to be quiet.

"So babe, what did you think of that?", I asked sarcastically, partially expecting abuse and  annoyance for interrupting his precious sleep.

"Erin, I could listen to you play all day", he said in a beautiful, sincere and genuine response.

I've been thinking of this continually this week. How could Scott, a seasoned Master of the violin, appreciated my small offering of a few pure notes and a thousand missed ones?

In the book The Continuous Conversion by BradWilcox he says,

Am I willing to gradually be perfected, or am I impatiently just wanting to be instantly made perfect?
To instantly play perfectly?
To just pick up my violin and play like the Master?

In the book, Wilcox uses an analogy that I loved.

"Many people, as they feel themselves falling short of perfection, are tempted to quit trying. But are there only two options?"

He continues, "When a person is learning to play the piano, are the only two options performing at Carnegie Hall or quitting?

NO!" he writes, "Growth and Development take time. Learning takes practice. Discipleship is a journey, and true conversion is a CONTINUOUS PROCESS."

So why is it that Scott, who plays the violin Perfectly; the perfect tone, the perfect vibrato...could appreciate and enjoy my squeaks?

Could it possibly be because he has been there?
Could it be because through years and years of practicing he has already paid the price?

Don't you think that one who has paid the price and put in the effort could enjoy the missed notes of a novice more than someone who never played the violin could appreciate the squeaky notes of an imperfect player.

And doesn't the Savior, our Master, appreciate our true, most sincere efforts to continually practice for perfection?
To strive to "learn heaven" and not "earn it."

Perfection takes time. It takes a Continuous Conversion.

And guess what?

The savior appreciates our continued efforts because:
He has been there.
He has already paid the Price.

And just like Scott said that he could listen to me play the violin all day, the Savior invites us too to make our best offering.

And through the atonement of Jesus Christ our tune can be perfected, our efforts magnified and we may all hear those precious words, "Well done thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things , I will make thee ruler over many things, enter thou into the joy of the Lord." (Matt 25: 21)

30 Day and 90 Day Book Of Mormon Reading Schedules

The Book Of Mormon Forum Challenge is going on today over at BeingLDS:

Ever since I first challenged myself to read The Book Of Mormon in 30 Days I have had a deeper love for the scriptures and a stronger desire to love, serve and keep the commandments. When I Finished my 30 Day challenge I had a complete change of heart. I felt a deeper resolve to live the gospel than I had ever had before. I have had many people download my 30 Day Reading Schedule and I love it when they let me know that they have accepted the challenge. I have decided to include a 90 Day Reading Schedule here as well, so that everybody can find a reading plan that fits their schedule. 

Last night I had an experience with Kate. She had acted out in a behavior that really upset me. My first thought was that we needed to punish her. Really punish her. I even told Scott to go and give her a big spank. Luckily, Scott was more in line with Gospel teachings and insisted we wait and think about it. I was very disappointed in her, so much so that I was crying and really, really sad. I thought about how Enos father must have felt when he didn't think that Enos was grasping the principles of the gospel or trying to keep the commandments. I thought about how Alma must have felt when his son was running around trying to destroy the church and lead people astray. Both of these fathers must have mourned their son's mistakes and prayed mightily for them to feel the Saviors love, to make good choices, and to begin keeping the commandments.

As Scott and I knelt beside Kate's bed we looked into her 7 year old eyes. Suddenly I was much less concerned with her actual behavior, and much more concerned with helping her know and feel her Heavenly Father's love. Reminding her that she is a Daughter of God and that she has more value and worth than she will ever know. I went from almost ruining this sweet experience by spanking her in a moment of anger and rage, to feeling a love for her deeper than I have ever felt before. I sat and held her as she cried because of the sorrow she felt for the wrong she had done. And when I turned out the lights and tucked her into bed she told me she loved me and just how sorry she was. 

And I know that she is wonderful. 

What if I had missed out on that?

I am so grateful for The Book Of Mormon in my life. I'm grateful for prophets that feel like mentors and friends, for scriptures that sink deep into my soul, and for a husband that was able to help me stop for a moment and just think.

April 2012 General Conference--No Ordinary Blessing by Dieter F. Uchtdorf: (How to prepare for General Conference)

I am really excited to share this message with you. It is a great reminder of three important points we can remember and apply as we prepare and participate in General Conference.

General Conference—No Ordinary Blessing

A fine member of the Church was talking with a neighbor who was not of our faith. When the topic of discussion turned to general conference, the neighbor asked, “You say you have prophets and apostles? And twice a year in a worldwide conference they reveal the word of God?”

“Absolutely,” the member replied with confidence.

The neighbor thought about that for a moment. He seemed genuinely interested and then asked, “What did they say in the last general conference?”

At this point the good member of the Church went from feeling excited about sharing the gospel to feeling embarrassed. Try as he might, he couldn’t think of the details of a single talk.

His friend found this troubling and said, “You mean to tell me that God speaks to man in our day and you can’t remember what He said?”

The brother felt humbled by this exchange. He vowed that he would do better to remember the words spoken by the Lord’s servants in general conference.

We all know how hard it is to remember every message of general conference, and I’m confident that we need not be embarrassed if we don’t remember everything. Nevertheless, there are messages in each general conference given as a gift and a blessing from heaven specifically for our personal life situations.

In preparation for general conference, let me suggest three basic concepts that may help us to better receive, remember, and apply the words spoken by the Lord’s servants.

1. Members of the Church are entitled to personal revelation as they listen to and study the inspired words spoken at general conference.

As you prepare for general conference, I invite you to ponder questions you need to have answered. For example, you might yearn for direction and guidance by the Lord regarding challenges you are facing.

Answers to your specific prayers may come directly from a particular talk or from a specific phrase. At other times answers may come in a seemingly unrelated word, phrase, or song. A heart filled with gratitudefor the blessings of life and an earnest desire to hear and follow the words of counsel will prepare the way for personal revelation.

2. Don’t discount a message merely because it sounds familiar.

Prophets have always taught by repetition; it is a law of learning. You will hear repetition in themes and doctrines in general conference. Let me reassure you: this is not due to a lack of creativity or imagination. We continue to hear messages on similar issues because the Lord is teaching and impressing upon our minds and hearts certain foundational principles of great eternal importance that must be understood and acted upon before we can move on to other things. A wise builder first lays the foundation before erecting the walls and the roof.

3. The words spoken at general conference should be a compass that points the way for us during the coming months.

If we listen to and follow the promptings of the Spirit, they will serve as a Liahona, guiding us through the unknown, challenging valleys and mountains that are ahead (see 1 Nephi 16).

Since the world began, God has raised up prophets who speak the will of heaven to the people of their times. It is our responsibility to listen and then apply the messages the Lord provides for us.

Our merciful and loving Heavenly Father has not forsaken and will not forsake His children. Today, as well as in times past, He has appointed apostles and prophets. He continues to reveal His word to them.

What a marvelous privilege it is to hear God’s messages for each of us during general conference! Let us prepare well for this great blessing of divine guidance delivered by His chosen servants.

For this is no ordinary blessing.

A Change Of Heart

Conversion By The Word Of God:
My Experience Reading The Book Of Mormon in 30 days 

About two months ago I had an impression. I felt very strongly that I needed to start blogging again. I wasn't really sure what I was suppose to blog about, only that I needed to start making an effort. It seemed like kind of a silly impression, but I decided to start keeping track of the changes that I was trying to make in my life.

Within a few weeks I stumbled across Jocelyn's idea to have a BOOK OF MORMON forum. I knew instantly that I wanted to participate. I quickly realized that while I loved The Book Of Mormon and knew that it was the Word Of God, I had one problem. How could I profess to testify and teach about a book that I had become so unfamiliar with? My scripture study had been minimal for years. My love for the Scriptures had died, and I was unfamiliar with the Voice Of The Lord.

How could I participate in a Forum about The Book Of Mormon when I hadn't even read it cover to cover since I was a missionary 13 years ago?

I felt a call to ACTION.

I felt a resolve to be BETTER.

I felt the need to CHANGE.

I knew that Jocelyn's purpose in starting The Book Of Mormon Forum was to share her testimony about the Gospel with others.

I realized that my participation was going to be sharing the gospel with Myself.

I love this quote by Elder Jeffery R. Holland:

"You can change anything you want to change, 

and you can do it very fast.

 That’s another satanic suckerpunch—

that it takes years and years and eons of eternity to repent.

 It takes exactly as long to repent as it takes you to say,

 “I’ll change”—and mean it. 

Of course there will be problems to work out and restitutions to make. 

You may well spend—indeed you had better spend—

the rest of your life proving your repentance by its permanence. 

But change, growth, renewal, and repentance can come for you 

as instantaneously as for Alma and the sons of Mosiah.

 Even if you have serious amends to make, 

it is not likely that you would qualify for the term,

 “the vilest of sinners,” 

which is the phrase Mormon uses in describing these young men. 

Yet as Alma recounts his own experience

 in the thirty-sixth chapter of the book that bears his name, 

his repentance appears to have been as instantaneous as it was stunning."

This quote is so beautiful and I believe it with all my heart. I am a different person than I was 28 days ago. I have been purified by the Word Of God. I feel Closer to My Savior. I feel determined to stand as a witness of God at all times, and in all places and in all things.

Elder Scott in his recent General Conference address reminded me that The Scriptures are like precious friendships. I have become reacquainted with them. I love them. I feel the POWER that they offer. 

I know that The Book Of Mormon bears testimony of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Book Of Mormon is the Word Of God.

The teachings found in this book are True.

I can proudly tell you that I LOVE THIS BOOK.

I know that the Savior Lives, and Loves us.

I know that there is Peace & Safety in the Plan Of Salvation.

I know that the path to happiness is found in Righteousness.

I encourage anyone to read The Book Of Mormon.

Pray About it.

Seek after Christ.

Keep the commandments.

Be Baptized.

I found the Savior. 

And.

You. 

Can

Too.

Falling In Love With The Scriptures by Wendy Oswald

 (I asked my neighbor and new friend Wendy to write a post for me covering 

her lesson at our recent Super Saturday.

 She was nice enough to oblige me. You can fine her blog {Here}.)

I was asked to write my class down for a friend that has a blog. So after a partial clean up, I am at home to see if I can remember what I said twice today. :)

I have been thinking about this topic for two months. I decided to ask my husband about it, I like to get his opinion on things sometimes. He went in a totally different direction than I was thinking. And the more I thought about it, the more I knew he was right. So I will give a brief overview of what I was thinking to begin with and then share some of his thoughts with my new direction.

When we read scriptures, it is good to know:

    Who - is "talking" and who is being addressed
    Where -  they are
    What - is being said and what is going on.

Knowing these things is helpful to keep track of the story.

My husband got me thinking about the Why. And then I went to the General Relief Society Broadcast and listened to President Uchtdorf. One on his 5 'forget nots' was forget not the why. And I knew that was what I needed to focus on.

Why do we read the scriptures? (This a discussion part. Feel free to add items to the list.)

1. It is a commandment.
2. To learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus.
3. To invite the Holy Ghost into our day.
4. Our homes are more peaceful when we do read
5. To be an example to our children.
6. To find answers.
7. When we need comfort.

I loved Elder Scott's conference address from this past Conference (October 2011). He basically gave my assignment. Here are some of the "whys" he gave for reading the scriptures.

1. "They are readily available.
2. Inspired communication from the Holy Ghost - Pure Truth.
3. Foundation of truth.
4. Pondering a passage of scripture can be a key to unlock revelation.
5. Calm an agitated soul.
6. Heal emotional challenges.
7. Accelerate physical healing -- I did not know this one.
8. Blessed with an added measure of the Spirit of the Lord.
9. Blessed with a greater resolve to obey.
10. Blessed with a stronger testimony.
11. Greater happiness, peace and attainment in this life."

Elder Scott also encouraged us to memorize scriptures. He shared some of his favorites.

It reminded me of my life. When I was a Merrie Miss in the Primary, we were encouraged to memorize the Articles of Faith. There was a scripture to memorize for each Article. The scripture that I remember from then is Amos 3:7 "For surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets."

When I was senior in high school, someone I loved and trusted tried to destroy my testimony. This person had wandered from the Church and has lost their testimony. I spent a long night afraid that what I had believed all my life might be wrong. I was too afraid to pray. But my whole being was focused on this question. I believe this can be a form of prayer. I don't think I slept that night. When the dawn broke the scripture I had memorized six years earlier rang through my soul, and I knew that prophets spoke directly with God. That experience and answer are the bed rock of my testimony. When I am in turmoil, I can "cast [my] mind upon the night that [I] cried unto [him] in [my] heart, that [I] might know concerning the truth. . ." And I testify that he "[spoke] peace to [my] mind concerning the matter." (see D&C 6:22 - 23).

That scripture was definitely my friend that night, and in all my troubles since. Knowing that, I am a bit ashamed that I have not continued in my efforts to memorize scriptures. Elder Scott has encouraged me to begin again.

We are blessed to have the scriptures in our homes. It has not always been so. Elder Christofferson related the story of William Tyndale in his address in April 2010. He determined to translate the Bible into English. He had to hide in Germany to work on his translation. He was eventually found and imprisoned for 18 months in a dark, damp cell. Then he was executed. The prophets who wrote the scriptures were at times killed for their testimonies. The brave Reformers often were killed for their efforts to bring the scriptures to the common man. Today we are the beneficiaries of these brave and true men. We often have multiple copies of the scriptures in our homes.

So now the question is How do we read them.

The first time I read the Old Testament, I had just received my mission call. I wondered how I could be a missionary if I had not read the scriptures. So, in an attempt to be obedient, I read the Old Testament. For many years, I considered it as checked off my to do list.

Then I decided to read it again. The second time, I read it with the Institute Manual. These manuals are prepared by the Church education department. They offer testimonies and stories of modern prophets, explanations of ancient culture and vocabulary and insights to ancient geography.

I have found the more I read the Old Testament, the more I love it. And that can be said of every standard work.

I picked one of my favorite verses from four of the standard works to share.

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy path."  Proverbs 3:5 - 6

Just before His arrest and death, Jesus told his apostles: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth , give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."   John 14:27

After Moroni had been alone for a long time. He had already written what he thought was his last words in the book that would bear his father's name. He included two of his fathers personal letters. The entire world that he knew had fallen into wickedness. Mormon described briefly the depravity of the Lamanites and the worse state of the Nephites. He said, ". . . I cannot recommend them unto God lest he should smite me. But behold, my son, I recommend thee unto God, and I trust in Christ that thou wilt be saved." In that evil time, a righteous father raised a righteous son. Moroni 9: 21 - 22

Our lives are filled with things to do. Sometimes we get so overwhelmed that we feel like we are running in circles. Jesus told Joseph Smith, ". . . Stop, and stand still until I command thee, and I will provide means whereby thou mayest accomplish the thing which I have commanded thee." We need to make time where we can be still and quiet so we can hear Him. D&C 5: 34

The scriptures are a gift - from a God that loves us.
They are an invitation - for us to follow Him.
They are a map - for us to know the way.
They are love notes - from our Father who wants us to return to Him.

Let us open them, and read them, and love them.

Wednesday: Did You Know?

Did You Know???

1. I made the LIST!!! I got a text yesterday from my friend Marlo and it said, "your name is written on the bathroom wall". I had to text her back to figure out what she was talking about. She was at Anytime Fitness and my name made the list for most club usage in the month of September. I was # 19!!! I burned off 10 lbs at that place in the last 6 weeks. I think I earned it!

2. I am still on track to complete The Book Of Mormon in the month of October. Today I was at the gym doing squats while I was reading Alma chapter 32. I'm having to make use of every spare second so that I can reach my goal. I feel immersed in the GOOD WORD OF GOD, and I am becoming reacquainted with my love of The Book Of Mormon.

3. Wyatt, Wy-Wiggs, Wiggles, WyWy turned 8 months old. His skin is so milky, I adore him. He loves to eat and finally has figured out how to swallow food. He is  obsessed with Baby Einstein, his mamma, watching the siblings play, sucking on anything and everything, waking up during the night...over...and over again, laughing, smiling, grunting and kissing.

4. The leaves on my new maple trees are to dye for. They are so beautiful and I love them so much. Thank you Scott for supporting my major splurge this year buying 10 new BIG trees.

5. Saturday I took Kate to the Doctor. I thought she had an ear infection, but she just has fluids draining behind her ears. The Doctor we saw was the nicest guy and told me an old pioneer trick for relieving pressure on the ears. This lead to talking about the movie 17 Miracles. Have you entered my giveaway? Only a few hours left. Then I made soup and took it to Super Saturday at the church. I spilled half of it in the back of my car (AHHHH!) I got to be social with my friends for a few hours and then Scott picked me up and we headed to the BRAND NEW $2.00 theater in Blackfoot and saw Cars 2 with the kids.



6. I was in the Movie the RM? If you are a new reader you might not know. I played the part of Molly and got to dump the RM. I am in the opening scene of the trailer saying goodbye at the airport. Feel free to make fun of me and laugh because BOY DO I!!!

7. Kate is 5 and she is nice enough to tie her older brother shoes for him. Dylan is 7 and just cannot make his fingers do the work. Poor kid.

8. I got to listen to Scott teach our Primary class on Sunday and he is AWESOME. He is so good at teaching and really has a way of keeping the kids attention and making the lesson appeal to them. This is so attractive to me and I sort of want to kiss him while he is teaching the lesson.

9. My friend SUE and her daughter KATE (sue is like a mother and Kate like a sister) were both in the hospital on Monday. Sue had an ENORMOUS surgery following her Chemotherapy to remove damaged and cancerous tissues ( I don't even know all they did) on the Pancreas and surrounding organs. She will be in the hospital recovering for 10 days. Kate had a baby on this very same day. Her first and I am so happy for her. Sue, I hope you get better quickly so that you can go and see that sweet little grandson! I'm praying for you.
